An RLSS Trainer Assessor (TA) is an individual who is qualified to deliver and assess RLSS qualifications. Whether you’re looking to upskill your team in-house or deliver RLSS qualifications to other organisations and the public, becoming a Trainer Assessor is a significant and rewarding step in your aquatics career.
As a TA, you can help train and assess colleagues within your own facility, support workforce development across the sector, or deliver RLSS qualifications independently to businesses and members of the public.

Prerequisites to Become an RLSS UK TA
Every candidate attending a Trainer Assessor course must (at the time of the cousre) be:
- At least 18 years of age.
- Hold a current Licence to Operator Membership to the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK).
- Hold a full qualification that matches the RLSS UK qualification that they wish to train others in (e.g. to become a National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) Trainer Assessor, you must hold a full National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ)).
Course Content
Days 1–3: TA Core Qualification
Candidates begin with the three-day TA Core qualification. This is a mandatory foundation that covers three modules and results in candidates becoming a Probationary RLSS Trainer Assessor for AED:
Module 1: Train the Trainer - (1 day) Develop the skills and knowledge to plan and deliver effective RLSS qualification training.
Module 2: Train the Assessor - (1 day) Learn how to assess candidates fairly, consistently, and in line with RLSS standards.
Module 3: CPR and AED - (1 day) Gain the knowledge and practical skills to deliver CPR and AED training to others.
Days 4+: Qualification Specialism
Once the TA Core is complete, candidates move into their chosen qualification specialism. Trainer Assessor courses are typically run to qualify candidates as TAs in a particular RLSS course — such as the NPLQ.
The great news is that once you hold the TA Core, you can add further specialisms in the future without needing to repeat it. The following TA Core plus Specialism combinations are available, with the additional delivery duration shown alongside each:
