The Architecture of Outstanding Swim Lessons with Helen Hughes
Join Helen Hughes, Owner of Mini Water Adventurers (MWA), as she explores what makes a swim lesson truly outstanding. It is not simply the activities we choose, but the way we design learning experiences that inspire confidence, curiosity and independence.
In this engaging and practical CPD session, Helen will explore how thoughtful lesson architecture can transform the way children learn in the water. Discover how purposeful play, movement challenges and child-led exploration can help swimmers develop problem-solving skills, resilience and a deeper understanding of movement, while reducing reliance on constant instruction.
The session will look at how teachers can create opportunities for exploration and independence while still maintaining clear learning intentions, purposeful progression and an environment in which every activity has a reason.
Drawing on more than 30 years of teaching experience and her specialist work in early years and child-centred swimming, Helen will share practical ideas that can be applied immediately to create more engaging and effective lessons.
Designed for swimming teachers and the wider aquatic workforce, including assistant teachers, coordinators, programme leads and managers, the session will support those involved in both the delivery and development of learn-to-swim programmes.
Participants will leave with practical approaches for using movement and play with greater purpose, encouraging swimmers to think and problem-solve for themselves, and creating learning experiences that build confidence, resilience, independence and capable, water-wise swimmers.
