Why International Women’s Day Is About More Than Just Women

At this time of year across the UK, something remarkable begins to happen. After the long winter months, the first daffodils begin to appear, bright yellow bursts of colour pushing through cold soil and uncertain weather to signal the arrival of spring.

Their resilience has inspired poets for generations. William Wordsworth captured their beauty perfectly when he wrote:

“I wandered lonely as a cloud

That floats on high o’er vales and hills,

When all at once I saw a crowd,

A host, of golden daffodils.”

Wordsworth described a host of daffodils dancing in the breeze. It is a powerful image, not just of one flower standing alone, but of many standing together. And that image feels particularly fitting as we reflect on International Women’s Day.

Across industries, communities and organisations, women continue to push forward, often overcoming barriers, expectations and challenges along the way. But like those daffodils, their impact becomes even more powerful when they are part of something bigger. When women support women, encourage one another and create space for others to grow.

But flourishing fields don’t appear by chance.

For people to thrive, the environment around them matters. Opportunity, encouragement, respect and support all play an important role in allowing individuals to grow and reach their full potential. This is where partnership becomes essential.

International Women’s Day is not only about celebrating women. It is also about recognising the importance of allies, colleagues and leaders who help create the conditions where women can flourish.

As founders of The Leisure Experts, Bethan Laker and I understand first-hand what it means to build a business in an industry that has traditionally been male-dominated. Throughout that journey, we have been fortunate to work alongside incredible professionals, both women and men. People who share a commitment to lifting others up and creating opportunities for the next generation.

Within The Leisure Experts’ swimming and gym community, we see this every day. Our swimming teachers, educators, gym staff and partners include passionate professionals of all backgrounds. Our male and female employees each bring different perspectives, experiences and strengths, and together they help shape an environment where everyone can succeed.

True progress comes when we recognise the value of both. It is not about competition. It is about collaboration.

Men supporting women. Women supporting men. Colleagues encouraging one another and creating spaces where everyone can develop and grow. Like a field of daffodils, each individual contributes to something bigger. Each person adds colour, strength and presence to the landscape.

And this spirit of collaboration is exactly what we will celebrate at The Leisure Experts Conference 2026. Designed to bring leisure industry leaders and professionals from across the wet and dry side together, to learn, connect and share experiences. Real progress in our sector will never come from individuals working in isolation. It comes from people coming together, sharing knowledge, supporting one another and building stronger environments for the future of leisure.

So this International Women’s Day, we celebrate the women who lead, teach, inspire and support within our industry. But we also recognise the colleagues, mentors and allies who stand beside them, helping to create the conditions where everyone can flourish.

Because when we work together, we don’t just see a single bloom. We see a field of possibility.

Join us at The Leisure Experts Conference 2026 and be part of the field of possibility. Book your place today.
